Work experience: what counts and how to total it

Work experience is practical time spent doing a job, whether paid or unpaid. It can come from a full-time role, a part-time job, an internship, an apprenticeship, freelance work or volunteering. Most applications ask for a total in years, so the first step is to list each role with its start and end dates and then add them up.

How to calculate total work experience

Start by writing down each job with its start month and end month. If you still work in a role, use the "I currently work here" option so the calculator counts up to the date you choose. Then add the periods together. A job from January 2021 to December 2021 is 12 months. Including both the start and end months is the usual method, and the calculator uses it too.

Work experience in months and years

Many employers and programmes express experience in years, but some ask for months or hours. Our calculator shows the total in years and months, in total months, and in days. If you worked part time, add your weekly hours and it will estimate total hours and full-time equivalent years, based on a 40-hour week.

Overlapping jobs

People often hold more than one role at a time, such as a part-time job alongside freelance work. If the dates overlap, the calculator counts the shared months only once in the overall total, so you do not overstate your experience. Each job still shows its full duration in the table.

Internships, apprenticeships and other job types

Whether an internship or apprenticeship counts as work experience depends on the institution, employer or country you are dealing with. The calculator lets you tag each job by type and shows subtotals, so you can see your totals with and without these roles. Always check the rules of the programme or employer that will rely on your figures.

Turning your experience into a resume or letter

Once you have your total, describe each role clearly with the job title, company, dates and a few achievements. Copy the summary from the results and use it as a starting point. If you need proof, ask your employer for a work experience certificate. Our letter samples include request letters and templates for different situations, and our role guides show example CV lines for many types of work.

Common questions

Read the guides for answers to questions such as whether an internship counts as work experience, how to write work experience on a resume, how to add it on LinkedIn, and whether you need work experience for an MBA.

Who uses a work experience calculator?

Most people need a total work experience figure at some point, often when a form asks for "years of experience" and the answer isn't obvious from memory. The calculator is useful in a few common situations.

Job applications and resumes

Recruiters often filter candidates by years of experience. Adding up your roles with exact dates gives you a figure you can state with confidence, and the copy-ready summary gives you a starting point for your resume's experience section. For wording by role, see the work experience by role page.

Study and scholarship applications

Many MBA programmes, scholarships and professional courses set a minimum amount of work experience. Separating full-time roles from internships and part-time work helps you see whether you meet a requirement under each rule. Check the exact definition the programme uses before you submit.

Visa and immigration files

Skilled-migration applications often ask for a precise employment history with dates. Use the calculator to check your totals, then get an employer letter that matches your records. Our letter samples include templates for employer certificates and reference letters.

Career breaks, freelancing and mixed work histories

If you have freelance projects alongside a job, or a few short roles, the overlap handling keeps the total accurate. Tag each job by type so the subtotals show how much of your experience comes from each kind of work.

Tips for accurate results

Frequently asked questions

How is work experience calculated?

Each job is counted from its start date to its end date, including both dates. Months are counted by calendar month. If you tick "I currently work here", the job runs up to the as-of date you choose.

Does an internship count as work experience?

It depends on your target institution or employer. This calculator lists internships and apprenticeships separately, so you can see totals with and without them. Check the rules of the program you are applying to.

How are overlapping jobs counted?

The total counts any overlapping months only once. Job-by-job durations still show the full length of each role.

Can I calculate part-time experience?

Yes. Enter weekly hours for a job and the calculator estimates total hours and full-time equivalent years, assuming a 40-hour week.

Is my data stored or uploaded?

No. All calculations happen in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to a server.
